Position Announcement - Alabama Board of Medical Examiners Director of Licensing

The Licensing Division is the foundation of the Board’s mission to ensure that only qualified physicians are licensed to practice medicine or osteopathy in Alabama.  The Director of Licensing has a challenging role in ensuring that applicants are qualified and competent to practice medicine or osteopathy.  The Director of Licensing is responsible for managing all aspects of licensing, which requires determining whether each applicant meets the criteria set by the Board of Medical Examiners and the Medical Licensure Commission. 

The Director of Licensing will supervise several employees.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
         Ensure that Board and Commission rules are followed in processing applications
         Manage employees, and review their work to ensure that applications are processed timely and accurately and that important matters that could impact the granting of a license are brought to the Board’s attention
         Determine if applicants are eligible for licensure
         Communicate with applicants and the Board to ensure applications are complete and that all applications submitted for Board approval meet the requisites of applicable statutes and rules
         Apply statutes and rules to the licensure process and identify issues, make recommendations
         Present problem applications to the Credentials Committee of the Board and to the full Board of Medical Examiners
         Report to the Executive Director and/or Associate Executive Director of the Board

Required Qualifications:
         Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science
         Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of employees
         At least 5 years of experience in managing employees
         Strong organizational skills
         Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
         Knowledge and understanding of statutes, rules, and policies as they apply to applicants
         Ability to coordinate, plan, meet deadlines, and accomplish assigned tasks
         Comply with confidentiality requirements
         Work well within an organization and be respectful to co-workers and subordinates
         Proficient in Microsoft Word and ability to use other computer-based applications

Preferred Qualifications:
         Advanced/Professional degree or professional license or professional certification in compliance
United States citizenship is required.
